Animals on Show

Everything four-legged and furry and two-legged and feathered featured at this year’s Show, from traditional Show animals such as horses, sheep and cows to alpacas, bilbies and reptiles.

Animals judged in Sydney Royal Competitions at this year included alpacas, caged birds, cats, cattle, cavies, dogs, goats, horses, pigs, poultry, pigeons, rabbits, rats, mice and sheep.

The Sunday Telegraph Animal Walk provided a trail of Harry the Dog’s paw prints to follow around to all the animal Pavilions, ensuring that no furry friends missed a visit.

The horses were a big drawcard with the inaugural Sydney Royal Horse Show running for the first eight days of the Show, followed by the Sydney Royal Horse Classic. Tentpegging, Campdraft, Showjumping and Polo featured in the first week with an international Polo match between Australia and Argentina. The following week was just as action-packed with Champion Hack, Galloway, Saddle & Harness Classes and Led & Ridden Breeds on Show.

There was a huge number of interactive attractions, including the Dairy Farmers Milking Barn and Working Dairy. The Dairy Farmers Farmyard Nursery was also a big success with cute and cuddly baby animals bringing a smile to thousands of
young Showgoer’s faces.

Some of the more unusual attractions in 2008 included Chook Washing and the
‘Fashion of the Fields Parade’, as part of the Pied Piper Duck Show. These
parades were a big crowd pleaser with ducks modelling outfits ranging from
wedding dresses to geisha gowns!
