The Wimbledon of Woodchop
Did you know that there is a woodchop contest running every 10 minutes at the Sydney Royal Easter Show until April 21?
The annual Sydney Royal Woodchopping & Sawing Competition is often called the “Wimbledon of woodchopping” – featuring 7 World Championships in 2025.
More than 150 top competitors from across the world will be battling it out for the $250,000 in cash prizes up for grabs.
It’s a thrilling spectacle of strength, skill and tradition. Woodchopping is one of Australia’s oldest sports, and is a must-see event at the Show.
Head to Ugly Fish Woodchop Stadium to cheer on our woodchoppers in events including:
TREE FELLING: This is one of the most challenging of the events. Woodchoppers cut “pockets” into a wooden pole to wedge a board in place, which they then stand on as they repeat the process – climbing up the pole.
UNDERHAND: Competitors stand on a horizontal block and cut down into it. Many woodchoppers even wear chainmail socks as a safety measure!
STANDING BLOCK: The wooden black is held vertically, with competitors cutting into it from the side.
SAWING: In double-handed or single-handed sawing events, competitors race to saw through a block. They compete individually or as a pair.
